I have a friend. Let’s call him Burt. Burt is lean and fit, very athletic and his weight is just about where it should be by health standards. But Burt is not happy with it. He wants to be leaner, stronger and he wants to have a six pack clearly visible to show it of on the beach or whatever is his reason to have it.
Burt plays soccer, he works out at the gym, he surfs occasionally, he runs and he skies. He is been trying to be so lean so his six pack abs are clearly visible for 3 years now, asking me always what he’s doing wrong, why is he still not having it. And he says he already does everything I told him.
Quite honestly, Burt is getting little annoying. But Burt is not alone. There are many people like that out there. They will tell you, that your advice is not working because they have been following it for quite a long time. And after a while they start believing that the problem is somewhere else, not in them.
3 Reasons why achieving a six pack abs is so difficult.
Consistency.
People like Burt set themselves a goal to achieve something. In Burt’s case its achieving six pack abs. They get exited and start with a huge force and motivation. This kind of enthusiasm lasts for about a month usually. Than something happens. Burt is into something else, like figure skating or computer games.
Excitement about his six pack faded away. Burt still goes to gym, but not that regularly anymore. Yes, he is still fit and strong and compare to many other people very athletic, but still kind of average. And he hates it.
In 2 months, he will realize again that he always wanted to have a six pack abs(SPA) and maybe he will get excited again for few weeks.
Is this something that describes you. You start working very hard on getting leaner and you are very exited about that. Than slowly and certainly that excitement disappears.
Difficult goals like SPA require time and brutal consistency. Some people manage to pull it off, they manage to keep comming even when they are not exited about it anymore. They show up, no matter what and get their work out done.
This kind of commitment is a valuable thing to posses. It’s hard to learn, but it is possible. But if you do learn it and keep it, you can achieve anything you want.
Intensity
When Burt shows up in the gym on his less exiting days, he is distracted, he watches TV on the machine, stops frequently, talks to people and ends up in hot tub for most of his work out time.
Intensity makes consistency even more difficult. It’s not fun to experience the pain in your muscles when you are pushing them to their limits. It;s difficult to run those 5 miles a little faster and finishing completely exhausted.
Yet it is very important. If you just show up in the gym with few magazines and talk to a friend for 15 minutes, lift some light dumbbells, hope on the bike for 10 minutes, yawn 3 times and go home, you will never improve. You will never have clearly visible SPA. SPA require intensity that push your muscles to the limits 2 to 3 times per week.
99.7% perfect diet
Burt will never have clearly visible abdominal muscles, not because he eats badly, but because his diet is not perfect. To achieve leanness so your six pack is clearly visible, your diet has to be 99.7% perfect. That 0.3% is occasional cookie or piece of birthday cake you have to have.
You can exercise for 3 years consistently and intensively, but if your diet is not almost perfect, you and nobody else will see your abs visible.
What you eat is not only important for achieving great leanness, it is also crucially important for your health.
Imagine yourself, that you are living 10 000 years ago. You live in the cave and now you are hungry. You get out of the cave and start looking for something to eat. You find some berry bushes full of berries, some apples and pears on the tree. You climb the tree and eat some apples and enjoy some berries too. Than you find some wild greens, nuts and if you are lucky, you catch a rabbit, turkey or fish for dinner. On the way back to the cave you stop at the creek to get some water. You cook the fish at home, have some greens and nuts with it and enjoy pear as a desert. Than you drink some water. And that is exactly how your diet should look like. A cave man diet is six- pack abs diet.
As a cave woman looking for food, you don’t find pizzas growing on trees or cupcakes growing on the ground or coke creek in the woods, or any candy bar trees. Those are all the bad foods modern society created and we are all surrounded by them. They taste good, they are addictive and very hard to resist. Yet some can resist it and you should too if you really care about your health and leanness.
Consistency + Intensity + 99.7% perfect diet = Six pack abs
If you are missing one of these important keys, achieving six pack abs is almost impossible. Fallowing them day in and day out is extremely hard to do. But it is possible. It requires some changes in your habits and creation of new habits.
I am challenging you to give it a try and challenge yourself, get disciplined and resists the temptations of quitting and eating bad stuff. And the reward you get is most importantly – great health, high energy and of course SPA you so desperately want.
