I came to a powerful realization the other day. Just watching my son. That little primal cute human being, that is all instincts and short attention span. Pure joy!
It went like this: On Tuesday, I spent the whole day with my little 2 year old Neanderthal. I don’t mean this in a bad way. I learned, that you actually have to look at them like this. This is normal, all toddlers are at the level of little Neanderthals. They are going through a rapid development that evolution is responsible for. Tens of thousands if years of evolution. And humans evolved over time to actually go through the stages very rapidly. Incredibly fast, in about 12 years or so, we develop to human beings, the ones we are now.
Anyway we stayed home and there wasn’t any junk food around. We had a typical healthy breakfast: 2 eggs, piece of fruit. And no problem. He ate it all. Afternoon snack: 3 whole strawberries. Perfect! Light lunch was a piece of organic tofu and piece of banana. Great! Than some milk and so on another piece of fruit after the nap. Great dinner: Paleo pizza. Yes the one without bread crust, but ground grass fed beef. Fantastic eating day, indeed! I was happy, he was happy. Indeed great for his health, development, memory. All those good things we want for our kids.
Now, the next week rolls in and there are cup cakes on the table. My little Neanderthal notices them first thing in the morning. He really demands them. I try to hide them. No success. To really bring things into a peace, I really had to give him a piece of the cup cake. And than all things eating vise went wrong for the whole day.
He wasn’t interested in fruit anymore! Understandable! Cupcake tastes better! Every meal felt like a major undertaking and negotiation. Cup cake was mentioned million times per day. He didn’t touch any fruit the whole day. And I had to promise him, that I will give him another piece after he eats his protein. And I did.
The six pack abs message
No offense here or anything like that. But we adults are not that much different than the 2 years old cute Neanderthals. As soon as junk foods like our example – cupcake enters our day, the fruit, veggies simply don’t taste that great anymore. We are less likely to have them around and eat them. And we don’t!
Take action now
What’s in the house gets eaten. If junk food is around the house, people eat it. What parents eat, kids eat! If parents keep the junk food around, and it could be just a little bit, they eat it. Their kids will automatically demand it too. They are smart about their taste buds. They don’t care about the consequences. They want a great tasting experience! Piece of apple? How boring daddy! Give me a cup cake! I want that cupcake! I want! I want! I want it now!
Anyway, the message here is: If you eat some junk foods in your day, and it doesn’t have to be a lot. Fruits, vegetables and other wholesome foods won’t taste that good. And you will not eat them. Your child will follow. And nobody will ever have six pack abs. Stop that vicious circle now!
