I was sitting in the car the last Friday at nearby park where I usually do my cardiovascular exercise. Sitting and thinking. Do I want to do this? No, I don’t. But I should. No. I am cold, I didn’t bring a rain jacket. I only have shorts and shirt. No way I am going to run outside when rain is pouring like this and it is so cold.
I was feeling a little bit disappointed, because I felt like I gave up, but I realized, that I have few very good reasons to do so. I grabbed the car key, put it into ignition, and decided to go home.
But than suddenly, I just got out of the car without thinking and started running. It felt cold and I was shivering in the beginning. Than after 10 minutes of warm up running I did my first three 100 yard sprints and I started to feel warm and energized. I was feeling suddenly warm, good and strong. I finished the rest of my sprints and came back to my car. I was completely wet so I changed to dry clothes and sit back inside my car.
While sitting there after about 45 minutes of intensive workout in heavy rain and cold weather, I realized that my energy level, fragility of the moment, I was cold and kind of tired and mood improved by at least 100 times. First, I didn’t disappoint myself and that felt good, but the blood floating in my veins and endorphins in it just gave me this euphoric great feeling that wasn’t even imaginable a little wile ago. I did it. I completed my workout.
Anyway, if it rains, or snows and it is miserable outside and you don’t feel like going there, because you are cold, kind of tired an comfortable at your warm home, do it anyway. You are about 1 hour from feeling amazingly great after finishing your workout in these miserable weather conditions. Plus all those great beneficial things you get from running in the storm – improved immunity, great feeling from endorphins, better fitness levels from being consistent with your overall workout plan.
You will have a great rest of your day! It’s no wander they recommend cold showers for mood improvement.
