Set a big goal and fight like hell to achieve it.
I watched the movie Far and away last week. It is an old movie where Tom Cruise acts poor young struggling Irish guy who comes to America as a servant of a girl (Nicole Kidman), that saves him with a huge desire to some day have his own land.
They struggle, work hard, almost die several times, but the drive persists. The movie ends up as a great love story, but starts as a desire to achieve something great – to have their own land.
In spite of the incredible hardship and pain, you can feel and relate how this poor Irish guy is incredibly happy, and works hard toward his goal and is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it – great acting from Tom Cruise.
My point here is, that having some incredible desire to really do something and to achieve it will give you an incredible amount of energy and pain at the same time. You forget the time passing by. All your senses will work at 100% potential, you fight like hell and it’s hurting like he’ll and you keep going until you achieve it. Because of all that pain, you are pushing your body and mind all the way to their limits, and that makes you stronger and smarter. Your body’s immunity system is fired to the maximum and all that, not even realizing makes you very happy. Even if you want it to be over everyday, it brings fire to your life we all seek.
The funny thing is that, once we achieve that incredible goal, we so much desire, all this goes away. That’s probably why the movie ends when they together finally find their own land. There is nothing else to tell, there is no more struggle and pain, the goal is achieved.
I thing at this point, if the movie continues, it will become boring. It will become boring, unless some other big goal that involves lots of struggle and pain and passion is set. Like for example somebody kidnaps Nicole and Tom is on the mission to find her. Or something less dramatic like finding 137 stolen horses and bringing them back home.
No matter how much you achieved already, how many huge mountains you climbed, you are done with them. You can file them in your life book and days become normal and maybe a little bit boring again. At this point, if you want to keep getting better, keep that magical fire burning and using all of your potential and more – yes it should hurt like hell, you need to set another big goal and decide to go for it.
All this, never being completelly finished might feel little bit depressing, but I think, it’s liberating. No matter where in life you are or how many huge goals you achieved already, another chapter is about to start. A chapter that will take the maximum out of you, that will cause a lot of pain and struggle again. And that will make you again incredibly happy and healthy. Go, rock on! Set an unachievable goal and do everything you can to achieve it. The side effects of it are incredible. We like our comfort zone and for a very good reason we hate it too.
